In 1774, Maria Rosa Coccia, then 15 years old, became the first woman to pass the examination and receive the title of Maestra di Capella in Rome. However, the church did not allow women to be in charge of music in religious institutions, and Coccia gave up composing before she turned 30. Her works are a fusion of secular and religious music with operatic elements, but \"Hic vir despiciens mundum\" shows that she could also compose in the style of traditional 18th-century Roman polyphony. The album also includes works by her teachers Pesci and Casali. All are world premiere recordings.
