This album is a collection of recent works by Magnus Lindberg, who is now a major figure not only in his native Finland but also in the international contemporary music scene. Lindberg has been known for his cutting-edge style that uses a pulsive, intense, and sometimes explosive sound, but in recent years, his style has been shifting to a more romantic one with a sense of tonality while maintaining a profound sound. The Viola Concerto is a large work consisting of seven parts, with a playing time of about 33 minutes. The soloist must perform a high level of technique in many places, while dealing with the thick orchestra. Lawrence Power does an excellent job here. Commissioned by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth, "Absence" is a piece with a playing time of just over 11 minutes that quotes motifs from Beethoven's music throughout. In particular, the melody from Piano Sonata No. 26 "Farewell," which is based on the theme of "absence," is used to great effect. Lindberg said of the "Serenade," commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, that it is not a slow, gentle music, but "a wild serenade. Lindberg also references Mahler's "Night Song" scherzo, and near the end of the piece, there is a reference to Beethoven's work. The performance time is just over 17 minutes, and the serenade is large, powerful, and full of ups and downs. The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and its principal conductor from 2021, Nicolas Colon, give a powerful and sharp performance. Recorded and mastered by veteran Enno Maemetz, who is highly regarded for his excellent recordings, this is an audio treat. (Naxos Japan)
