Includes an obi with Japanese commentary Born in Lille in 1983, Romain Leroux graduated at the top of his class from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris, and studied under Reinhold Friedrich. In 2012, he became the first tuba player to win the Best Newcomer Award for Instrumental Music at the Victoires de la Musique, the French version of the Grammy Awards. He is a gifted tuba player with a repertoire ranging from classical to contemporary and jazz. During the pandemic of the new Corona virus, which restricted their activities, the brothers came up with the idea of a unique ensemble: a duo of trumpet and tuba. This album, which consists entirely of the two duos, is a delight to listen to, with their skill, expressiveness, and perfectly matched breaths, making it hard to believe that they are playing with only two instruments that can only produce single notes. From the very beginning of the piece, "Air," the musical range and expressive power of this piece is astonishing. The program includes Bach and Halvorsen, which the two musicians say are the cornerstones of the program; a dazzling improvisation with a tuba solo; a sense of color by Couperin that is as strong as the brilliant original music; a ballad masterpiece crossed with Pachelbel's "Pachelbel" by Moschberger; and many more. Moschberger, who crosses that ballad with Pachelbel, and so on, all are worth listening to. (Naxos Japan)
