The time is the 14th century. Fernand, a monk of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, is captivated by Leonor, a beautiful woman who is praying at the altar one day, and refuses to listen to Balthazar, the abbot, who condemns him and expels him from the monastery. Fernand follows Leonor to the island of Leon, but she is actually the mistress of King Alphonse XI of Castile. Leonor, who tried to hide this fact and keep Fernand away from him, could not give up her love for him. ...... \"La Favorito\" (1840) was followed by \"Anna Bolena\" (1830), \"The Wonderful Medicine of Love\" (1832), \"Lucia di Lammermoor Donizetti, who came to Paris as a popular composer, became a dominant figure with such hits as \"Anna Bolena\" (1830), \"La Musee de l'Amour\" (1832), \"Lucia di Lammermoor\" (1835), and \"The Regiment's Daughter\" (1839), which he composed on a French libretto. The production at the Paris Opera was a great success. Later, when the work was performed outside France, the authorities censored the translation of the libretto, altering the correlations between the characters, and the Italian version, known as \"La Favorita,\" became the mainstream version performed throughout the world until the latter half of the 20th century. In recent years, however, there has been a growing trend to perform Donizetti's works in their original form as intended by the composer, and this production at the Donizetti Festival 2022 uses a comparatively revised score based on the original French libretto by Rebecca Harris-Warrick (Ricordi, 1997). The production by Valentina Carrasco, a member of the Spanish dance troupe La Fura dels Baus and the director of the much-discussed 2012 production of a shortened version of \"The Ring of the Nibelung\" at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, uses simple stage sets to clearly show the flow of the drama, while also using a ballet scene in Act II to celebrate victory. In the second act, a ballet scene celebrating the victory, a large number of old mistresses in the royal court dance and torture the king, but in the end, they are locked in a cage. This magnificent work is filled with famous arias and choruses sung by a distinguished cast of singers including Annalisa Stropper as Leonor, Javier Camarena as Fernand, Florian Sempey as Alphonse XI, and Evgeny Stavinsky as Balthasar. Riccardo Frizza, the music director of the Donizetti Festival, has a tight and expressive touch with this magnificent work.
