Caldara was born around 1670 in Venice, Italy. As a child, he was active as a choirboy at St. Mark's Basilica and learned to play an instrument, and in 1699 he became the court music director of the Gonzaga family, the Dukes of Mantova, a prominent family at that time. However, the War of the Spanish Succession caused the downfall of the Gonzaga family, and he moved from Rome to Vienna in search of work, eventually ending his life as deputy court music director in Vienna. He composed his first opera, \"Il piu bel nome The Most Beautiful Name,\" in 1708, and since then he has left many other works, including operas with Metastasio's script and masses that are said to have influenced Bach, but this \"Mary Magdalene at the feet of Christ\" is a cantata sung in Italian, It was first performed in Venice in 1700. The six characters surrounding Jesus and Mary sing a series of technical recitative and arias, and many of the arias are accompanied by violin and cello obbligato, giving the piece a beautiful melody. The expressive accompaniment by Le Banque Celeste, an ensemble of virtuoso musicians, is also noteworthy.
