He was born in Poland and moved to Hamburg at an early age, where he spent his youth and began his musical education. In 1921, he made his conducting debut with the Berlin Philharmonic, but fled to the United States to escape the Nazis. In 1939, he became ill and had to stop his activities in the United States for a time. After World War II, however, he returned to Europe and began his career around the world, beginning in Hungary. In 1952, Klemperer signed a contract with EMI to further expand his activities, and his highly successful 1955 concert of Mendelssohn (1809-1847) with the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra led to his appointment as the Philharmonia Orchestra's first permanent conductor in 1959. In 1959, he became the Philharmonia Orchestra's first permanent conductor. This recording includes that Mendelssohn's \"A Midsummer Night's Dream\" and Beethoven's (1770-1827) Symphony No. 8 from a concert given the previous year.
