Mozart's \"Prague\" \u0026amp; Wojciech Symphony Herbert Blomstedt and the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig have recorded a program with a Czech connection in memory of the famous Czech conductor Václav Neumann, who was the orchestra's Kapellmeister from 1964 to 1968. Jan Václav Neumann, who was the orchestra's Kapellmeister from 1964 until 1968. Jan Václav Wojciech (1791-1825) was born in the Czech Republic in 1791, the year Mozart died. He died of pulmonary tuberculosis at the age of 34, coincidentally the same age as Mozart. The work recorded here is Vozicek's only symphony in D major (completed in 1823). After studying at the University of Prague, Wojciech moved to Vienna when he was 22 years old, where he also became acquainted with Beethoven and Schubert, the composers of his time. This symphony, like those of his friend Schubert, was never published during his lifetime. Today, it is one of the most frequently performed of his works. It is a charming work in the classical style of Beethoven's early symphonies, interspersed with charming melodies like those of Mozart. And then there is Mozart's \"Prague\".In December 1786, his opera \"The Marriage of Figaro\" was performed in Prague to great acclaim, and Mozart received an invitation from Prague in January 1787. Upon his arrival in Prague, Mozart was surprised that his music was received with such enthusiasm. His Symphony No. 38 was premiered in Prague, and it was to be the curtain-raiser for Mozart's later symphonic works to follow. Blomstedt's \"Prague\" was recorded with the Staatskapelle Dresden (1982), and this disc offers a fine and deeply musical expression in a neat performance.
