The Divertimento-like light style of No. 9 drew the ire of the Soviet authorities, who were expecting the completion of a great symphony. The 15th Symphony, the last symphony to return to purely instrumental music after the previous two symphonies with vocal music, has a strong sense of parody, with quotations from Rossini, Wagner, and his own compositions. The two symphonies, with their similar cynicism and antics, convey a side of the composer that is not always easy to get right, while the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, of which Borejko is principal guest conductor until the end of the 2011\/12 season, continues to work with even greater skill.
