This 9-CD box set includes all of his recordings for Philips and Deutsche Grammophon. Ancell was the principal conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra during the Cold War, from 1950 to 1968, and made most of his recordings for the Czech Supraphon label. However, when the Czech Philharmonic began touring abroad, Ancell's own reputation grew along with theirs, and he began receiving invitations from major European and American orchestras. Deutsche Grammophon made a recording with them in 1955 while they were on tour in Germany, and listeners around the world became acquainted with the \"Ancell style\" of Shostakovich's Tenth Symphony: tense, clearly defined, and always singing expressively to the melody. I have come to know the \"Anchelle style,\" which is tense, clearly defined, and always expressive of the melody.All Philips recordings were made with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and include music by Dvořák and Tchaikovsky.
