The Danish composer Nils Goese was a close friend of Mendelssohn and also served as chief conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus. Also included are works by Göse's brother-in-law, Emil Hartmann, who studied in Leipzig. The works of Göse and Hartmann pay homage to the German Romanticism of Mendelssohn, Schubert, and Schumann, but are also vividly reminiscent of the world of Norse mythology and legend.
