Sigur Ri was born in Drammen, Norway in 1871 and grew up in Kristiania (now Oslo). He studied piano, violin, and music theory, and chose the violin as his instrument of choice while a student at the Lindemann School of Music Organists. He studied composition with Evel Holter and, like many young Norwegians of the time who wanted to pursue a musical career, went to Leipzig to study with Carl Reinecke from 1891 to 1893 and with Heinrich Urban in Berlin from 1894 to 1895. After returning to Japan, he was concertmaster of the \"Harmonien\" orchestra (Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra) in Bergen from 1895 to 1898, and returned to Christiania in 1898 to become Kapellmeister of the Central Theater. 1902 he was appointed conductor of the male voice choir \"Handelstanden Choral Club\" in 1902, and although he was expected to be active on the Norwegian music scene, he died of tuberculosis in 1904, at the age of only 33.He is best known for his \"Symphony in A minor\" and the choral work \"Snow\" in the late Romantic style, but he also composed more than 70 songs. Many of his songs were published before his death, and 15 of his unpublished songs were revised by Terje Mathiesen and Hans Magne Gräsvoll and published in 1999 as \"Sanger\" (Songs). Mezzo-soprano Marianne Beate Schelan (Marianne Beate Keelandt), with Nils Anders Mottensen, is the first of two albums of Sigle's complete songs, including the \"super hit\" \"Snow\", which was published before her death. The songs will be sung.Danish poets Helje Løse (1870-1937), Wilhelm Klag (1871-1933), Theodor Kasparie (1853-1948), and Nils Collett Vogt (1864-1937), who had attended the same school in Christiania, The text works are poems by Sigbjorn Opstfelder (1866-1900), Per Sivre (1857-1904), Magnus Brostrup Landstad (1802-1880), and Edal Handagar (1874-1959), a physician who also served to promote Nynorsk.
