Among these, the Prelude in C-sharp minor was premiered in concert that same year and became synonymous with the composer. Beginning with an ominous three-note motif and the sound of bells, it features fragments of \"The Day of Wrath\" in the coda, foreshadowing his later style. While it gained explosive popularity and remains beloved today under the nickname \"The Bells,\" the composer himself reportedly felt ambivalent about this piece receiving so much attention. Following the death of his revered mentor Tchaikovsky, the \"Salon Pieces\" Op. 10, premiered in 1894, placed the \"Nocturne\" and \"Romance,\" imbued with deep sorrow, among various character pieces. In 1940, parts of Op. 3 and Op. 10 were revised, revealing more complex harmonies and a more mature style of writing.This album includes both the original and revised versions of \"Melody,\" along with \"Three Nocturnes\" and \"Four Pieces\" written at age 14, allowing listeners to hear the fresh imagination of the young Rachmaninoff and the musical seeds that would later blossom into his mature works.
