Perozzi was born in Tortona, Piedmont, studied at the Conservatory in Milan, and became the music director of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, where he gained international fame for his oratorios and other religious vocal works. In the 1920s, Perozzi suffered from a temporary mental illness that forced him to take a leave of absence, but after recovering, he returned to his duties and resumed his compositional activities. The two piano quintets were composed in 1931, and were also written in 1931. They are substantial works that reveal the richness of Perozzi's ideas, who at the time was also seriously ill but still inspired by a vigorous creative spirit.
