The Huggers amassed enormous wealth through trade and mining operations in the 15th and 16th centuries, and were almost like the main bankers of the Holy Roman Empire, while Jacob was ranked as a nobleman. The music performed at his court is stored in the Austrian National Library in the form of a large number of manuscripts. The works recorded here are by composers of high renown in Germany, Flanders, and France at the time, who arranged popular songs of the time for viol (viola da gamba) ensemble. Tenor James Gilchrist joins in on some of the songs and sings the \"original songs\". The same popular songs of the time were circulated in various courts, but tracks 1-4, 6, 13, 14, 16-20, 24, and 29 are rare and only found in this collection. The Consort of Music's 1985 recording of \"Music of the Hugger Family\" was released on Harmonia Mundi in Germany, but this recording is a newer edition.
