German talkies began later than their American counterparts and took off around 1929. At that time, Germany was facing social unrest due to the postwar treatment of World War I, followed by the rise of the Nazis and then World War II, and the films produced during this period also reflected these conditions and, at times, the wishes of the regime. Although the music of the hit films of the time was popular among Germans, there is a mood of avoidance of public performances of their music today, reflecting on the Second World War. The project by Ernst Tice and the Munich Radio Orchestra removes the lyrics from the music and gives it a modern orchestration that calls for a reevaluation of the music itself and its appeal.
