For this recording of the organ concerto by Handel, a composer who had a considerable influence on the Viennese music of the post-classical period, including Haydn and Mozart, they chose a venue and instruments that are familiar from the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert: the Great Hall of the Musikverein and its organ, which was built in 1872 by Friedrich Radegaard. The current organ, the fourth generation of which was installed in 2011, is a Rieger organ that reproduces not only the symphonic sound of the Romantic period, but also the small, theater-quality organ that Handel envisioned. It can also reproduce the sound of a small theater organ as envisioned by Handel. Herselbeck and his colleagues bring out the best of this instrument with the harpsichord's bass passages as well.
