At the time, Tchaikovsky was revising the church music of his predecessor Bortniansky and was also impressed by his work. However, the Imperial Church prohibited the composition and singing of new Orthodox chants at this time, and when Tchaikovsky published the piece, he faced fierce opposition from the Church, and the dispute between the publisher and the Church became so contentious that the matter was taken to court. Tchaikovsky eventually won the case in court, but the first performance took place earlier, in June 1879, much to Tchaikovsky's delight. Enjoy this dramatic work, with its charming melody and powerful solo singing, performed by one of the finest ensembles of our time.
