The most notable feature is the participation of the elite members of the James Brown Orchestra, which would later evolve into the legendary “JBs.” Drummer Clyde Stubblefield, bassist Charles Sherrell, guitarist Jimmy Nolan, and the horn section led by Pee Wee Ellis (including Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley)—this tight lineup, arguably the finest in history, serves to highlight Marva’s aggressive vocals. The 12 tracks interweave up-tempo funk with soul ballads rooted in gospel. The title track, “It’s My Thing,” delivers an overwhelming funk vibe, while the first track on Side B, “Unwind Yourself,” was sampled by DJ Mark the 45 King ’s “The 900 Number” and DJ Kool’s “Let Me Clear My Throat,” cementing its historical value as a treasure trove of breakbeats. The album also includes “Things Got to Get Better,” “If You Love Me,” and the duet with JB, “You Got to Have a Job.” This is a seminal work that unravels the structure of JB Funk and the history of Sister Funk.
