Although Sell is not a conductor who loves Mahler's music, it is not his favorite repertoire, as evidenced by his aptitude with the Sixth Symphony. According to his record, he has conducted the \"Ode to the Earth\" only four times, but the first movement, with its aggressive and frenzied tempo, will leave the listener at the mercy of Mahler. The first movement is a moment of indulgence, which Sell himself had forbidden. The use of melting portamento is another surprising aspect of this piece, which is full of the venom and sex appeal that only Sell, who lived close to the end of the century in Vienna, could have brought to the music.
