Born into a performing arts family, he became interested in music and theater at an early age, making his debut in 1978 with the album \"Dreams About Life\" on Folkways. In 1993, he was cast as Robert Johnson in the musical \"Trick the Devil. He went on to star in a variety of films, including \"In Bed with the Blues,\" which he wrote and composed himself in 1994, and for which he won an Emmy Award.In 1995, he returned to music after a long absence, releasing the live album \"Stomp Down the Rider\" on Red House and the studio album \"Call Down the Thunder\" in 1996. He has been nominated for a total of nine WC Handy Awards. In recent years, he has been nominated for a Grammy for \"Sonny \u0026amp; Brownie's Last Train,\" which he released in 2005 as a duo with harpist Fabrizio Poggi.
