Composer, pianist, conductor, producer, and educator. After graduating from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, he studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris as a French Government Scholarship student in 1978. During this period, he studied composition with Yoshio Mamiya, Masayuki Nagatomi, Betsy Jolas, and Serge Nigg, and piano and piano accompaniment with Sadako Murai, Takako Horie, Yoshie Takara, Henriette Puig-Roger, and Jean Kerner. After graduation, he studied electroacoustic and computer music with Ligeti, Ferneyhough, and Donatoni in Darmstadt, Siena, and Aix-en-Provence, as well as at Itineraires and IRCAM. Among his more than 80 compositions are commissions from the French Ministry of Culture, the Ensemble Intercontemporain, IRCAM, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the National Theater, and others. As a pianist, he was the piano player of the Ensemble Itineraires from 1982 to 1990.As a soloist, he has performed with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France (now Orchestre National de la Philharmonique de France), the Basel Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Ensemble Intercontemporain, the London Sinfonietta, and other orchestras in Japan and abroad. He has performed with Michel Debost, Gérard Poullet, Rainer Honeck, Wenzel Fuchs, Dietrich Henschel, Nobuko Imai, and many other renowned chamber musicians in Japan and abroad. He specializes in a wide range of repertoire from classical to contemporary music. He has performed the world premieres of many Japanese works including Philippe Manulli's \"Pluton\" and \"Passacaglia in Tokyo,\" George Benjamin's \"Antara,\" and Yoshio Mamiya's \"Piano Concerto No. 4,\" as well as the \"Piano Concerto\" by Georges Ligeti, Tristan Murail, Philippe Manulli He has also given the Japanese premieres of many piano works by Georges Ligeti, Tristan Murail, Philippe Manoury, Marco Stroppa, George Benjamin, and others. He was the first representative of the Tokyo Sinfonietta and a member of The Ways, an original ensemble of the Saitama Arts Theatre.To date, he has released more than 90 CDs on labels such as Nami Records and Music Scape, including collections of the complete piano works of Toru Takemitsu and Joji Yuasa, the complete piano sonatas of Beethoven and Mozart, and the Bach Mean Clavier Works on piano, harpsichord, and organ. He has received the Suntory Music Award (2004). He has received numerous awards, including the Suntory Music Award (2004), the Minister of Education's Art Encouragement Prize for New Artist and the Minister of Education's Prize (1996, 2005), and two Otaka Awards (1996, 2013). In 2012, he was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon. He is currently a professor at Tokyo University of the Arts and artistic director of Shizuoka Music Hall AOI.
