Although Italian opera reached its peak in the late 18th century, around 1850, composers emerged in Madrid who sought to create a national Spanish opera. Barbieri’s *The Barber of La Bajada*, which premiered in 1874, was a pioneer in this movement. As its title—a satirical reference to Rossini’s *The Barber of Seville*—suggests, the work rejected the virtuosic arias of Italian opera in favor of simpler music steeped in regional flavor. This collection features zarzuelas composed from this work onward through the early 20th century.
