The festival, funded by wealthy citizens and launched in 1946, features four weeks of spectacular operas that combine traditional performing arts with cutting-edge technology at the Theatre on the Lake, which is set on Lake Constance, as well as in adjacent halls. This is a video of \"The Hunting Gun (Das Jagdgewehr),\" performed in August 2018; the opera is based on Yasushi Inoue's 1949 short story \"The Hunting Gun,\" composed by contemporary Austrian musician Thomas Larcher, and given its world premiere at the festival. The novel \"The Hunting Gun\" is an early work by Yasushi Inoue and was written around the same time as \"The Bullfight,\" which won the Akutagawa Prize. The story begins when a poet suddenly receives a letter from a man (Josuke Misugi). This love story reveals Josuke's 13-year affair through three letters from his wife (Midori), his mistress (Ayako), and his mistress' daughter (Barako).Director Karl Markovics' sensitive psychological portrayal and Thomas Larcher's skillful music make for an original operatic film.
