Commissioned to write a work celebrating the coronation of Charles X, Rossini produced Il viaggio a Reims, only for it to be shelved as a mere occasional piece. Much of its music was subsequently recycled into Le Comte Ory. (Il viaggio a Reims was finally revived by Claudio Abbado in 1984, 160 years after its composition.)\n\nThis film captures a live performance given at the Opera Comique in Paris in December 2017. The production is by Denis Podalydes, an actor and member of the Comedie-Francaise; the costumes are by the celebrated French designer Christian Lacroix; and Louis Langree conducts the Orchestre des Champs-Elysees. Podalydes and Langree had already worked together on a 2009 staging of Andre Messager's Fortunio, and here again they create a staging that is both refined and full of energy. The title role is taken by the Nantes-born tenor Philippe Talbot, with the rising French soprano Julie Fuchs as the Countess, the French mezzo-soprano Gaelle Arquez, highly regarded in baroque opera, and the Geneva-born mezzo Eve-Maud Hubeaux - an enticing line-up of accomplished younger singers.\n\n(Synopsis)\nA comedy set in the Touraine region of France in the early thirteenth century. While the lord of the castle, Count Formoutiers, is away on crusade, the women wait for his return. The womanising Count Ory has stayed behind, living in a cave disguised as a hermit and accepting gifts from the women who come to confide their romantic troubles. His tutor, ordered by Ory's father to bring him home, is suspicious of this hermit. The page Isolier goes to the cave to unburden himself about his love for the Countess Adele, but when Adele and the tutor appear, the hermit's true identity is exposed.
