Ye Xiaogang's \"Images of Sichuan\" and \"Concerto of Life\" Ye Xiaogang [Ip Xiaogang] is a leading Chinese composer born in 1955. After studying at the Central Conservatory of Music, he went to New York in 1987 to further his studies. Xiaogang's name became known worldwide when his piano concerto \"Starring Sky\" was used for the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and was performed by Lang Lang. This work is also known as the recording of the album \"Winter\" (BIS-2113) performed by Noriko Ogawa. This highly anticipated album includes two pieces, \"Images of Sichuan\" and \"Concerto of Life\"! Commissioned by the Sichuan Philharmonic Orchestra, the symphonic picture \"Images of Sichuan\" is a work for orchestra consisting of 29 short pieces for a film about travel in the scenic regions of western China. Ye Xiaogang, who was commissioned to compose the piece, actually visited the mountains, rivers, villages, towns, and areas inhabited by ethnic minorities in Sichuan to \"sound\" the unique natural scenery and thousand-year-old historical sites of western China. The large orchestra is joined by a group of traditional Chinese instruments in addition to a solo percussion part, adding a unique color to the work. Concerto for Life\" is a suite for piano and orchestra in seven movements, recomposed from music composed for a film of the same name in 2000. The moving moments of the film and the pianist who overcame hardships with illness to teach his students are condensed in this music, and Noriko Ogawa, the soloist, gives an emotionally beautiful performance.
