Shafran learned the cello from his father, the principal cellist of the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, and at the age of 11 he played Tchaikovsky's "Variations on a Rococo Theme" with the orchestra. At the age of 14, he won the All-Union Competition and was presented with a 1630 Amati, which he used for the rest of his life. He studied at the Leningrad Conservatory under Alexander Sitrimer, was a soloist with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra from 1943, won the first prize at the International Cello Competition in Prague in 1950, and later served on the jury of the Tchaikovsky Competition.

Inspired by the performances of Pablo Casals, Shafran deepened his understanding of Bach, and this album is a reissue of a masterpiece that he inscribed in the early 1970s, a period of artistic maturity. By utilizing the rich sound of the cello, fine bowing, natural vibrato, and rhythmic sense of the dances, he revived Bach's music not as a cold relic of the Baroque but as music for the modern age. Please pay attention to this timeless masterpiece that continues to be loved by people throughout the ages.

Tokyo M-Plus
