His five symphonies, written during the turbulent period overcoming the revolution and leading up to the Soviet Union, have attracted much attention. Completed in 1963, Symphony No. 4 was premiered by the then Leningrad (St. Petersburg) Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Nathan Rachlin. The clear tonality and Ukrainian folk music of No. 4 were heavily criticized by the critics of the time, but the earliness of the work is priceless. No. 5, which opens with a high brass roar, is also a very enjoyable work, with folk songs and dances from the Slavic world woven into the material. This Badel disc has been out of production for a long time, but has now been reissued at a reduced price.
