This is a sumptuous anthology of Balkan music produced by Martin Koenig, a Balkan music researcher and founder of the Balkan Arts Center in New York City, who traveled to Bulgaria six times during the decade from 1966 to 1979 with a camera and portable recorder. He traveled to Bulgaria six times between 1966 and 1979 with a camera and portable recorder, sampling the local traditional cultural heritage, which was still vibrant at the time, and rare folk music, which was already on the verge of extinction. Now, half a century later, he has compiled the results into two CDs of 109 minutes of field recordings and a 143-page booklet. Here, Bulgaria is divided into seven regions, each with its own folk music characteristics. The CD also includes instrumental music played on the kaval (flute), gadurka (fiddle), and gaida (bagpipes), which are representative of Bulgarian folk instruments, as well as polyphonic choruses, which are the origin of the Bulgarian voice, and sounds influenced by neighboring Turkey and other countries.
