Needless to say, these fantasias are gems among the most important repertoire for unaccompanied melodic instruments. However, as I read through the twelve fantasias with this in mind, I began to think that I had no choice but to make another recording of the entire cycle. Each fantasia, though short, has its own unique charm, condensing the essence of the Prelude and Fugue, the Sonata, the Overture, and the Concerto. Even the easygoing dance movements at the end of each piece all have remarkably different character. The greatest appeal of this collection is the breadth of expression that can be achieved with just one melodic line.--Mutsuyuki Motomura (from liner notes)About Mutsuyuki MotomuraMutsuyuki Motomura studied in Amsterdam under Walter van Hauwe and Janet van Wijngaarden, and continued his activities based in the Netherlands in the 1990s, returning to Japan in 2001. She returned to Japan in 2001. After working with the ensemble \"Rusthoffers\" and other ensembles, as of 2015 she has been developing a recital series in and around Tokyo that comprehensively covers her repertoire, and has been attracting attention for her activities to expand the world of recorder music, including commissioned premieres of contemporary works for ensemble. In his previous work, \"600 Years of Solo Recorder Music,\" he showed how versatile it is to play with only one recorder, with his deep insight into various styles from the Middle Ages to contemporary music and his overwhelming technique. In this recording, however, Telemann fully expresses the possibilities of unaccompanied music that he presented at the time of the late Baroque period. This is a performance that only Motomura, who has been pursuing expressions that cannot be obtained from modern wind instruments, can give by making full use of the characteristics of the recorder.
