London/Freetown-based multi-artist Duval Timothy, who is gaining more and more attention for his collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Mount Kimbie, Nosaj Things, Vegyn, and many others, has released his latest and greatest work Recorded between 2019 and 2022 primarily at his home studio in South London, Carrying Colour studio in Freetown, the former police station studio in Rotherhays, and "Casa Mahler" in Spoleto, the album was recorded using Moog Grandmother, double bass, electric guitar, and Juno-G. Field recordings were made with cell phones and Zoom recorders to capture the sounds of various birds, insects, monkeys, bats, plants, trees, and stones." The recordings were made on a variety of pianos. The Freetown uprights sounded like harpsichords when the moisture stripped the felt off the hammers and the raw wood struck the strings.Some of the piano recordings on "Up" and "Drift" were composed and recorded in April 2021 during Duval's residency at Mahler & LeWitt Studios in Spoleto as part of the Mahler Foundation's "Mahler, The Song of the Earth" project. During the residency, Duval studied and worked on the life and works of Gustav Mahler, particularly "Das Lied Von Der Erde (Song of the Earth), a vast collection of songs concerned with the themes of nature, forgiveness, friendship, and death." While working on this piece, I wanted to explore what the natural environment meant to me. I made many trips into nature to interact with plants and natural materials. In all of these situations, I found wonderful examples of being close to nature: a routine walk in South London, a walk with my mother in the hills around Bath, a hike in Freetown, the hills of Spoleto, Ghana, and a nature reserve in Sierra Leone."The fresh collaborations of the Van Couver-based Chinese artist Yu Su, his close friend Vegyn, and up-and-coming artists such as FAUZIA, Lamin Fofana, and Kiran Kai add depth to the work and make it not only a fascinating work as a pianist and a sound artist, but also a nourishing work of human emotion and empathy. The result is a deeply nourishing work that evokes not only charm as a pianist and a sound artist, but also human emotion and empathy.
