Lively depiction of masks and the real faces behind them Elizabeth I was one of the few female monarchs of the 16th century. She was one of the few female monarchs of the 16th century. She was a fairy, a minstrel, a Virgin... To express her status as a "fairy," "minstrel," "saint," etc., she put on a variety of faces as if she were at a masquerade ball. The music of the masques that were so popular at the time also sang the praises of the queen and created her image.
