Kubelík's first appearance at the festival was on August 28, 1948. A few weeks before this concert, Kubelík, who was opposed to the communization of the Czech Republic, went to England to participate in the Edinburgh Festival that same year, and then defected to England. He appeared at the Lucerne Festival 25 times until 1990, making it one of the most important festivals for Kubelík, and one of the most important for him. He has performed Bartók's opera Bluebeard's Castle (August 15, 1962) (AU-95626) on CD (Kubelík became a Swiss citizen in 1972; he died in Lucerne in 1996).
