A native of Bergen, Grieg has a close relationship with the Bergen Philharmonic, having served as its principal conductor, and this is the second Grieg recording by Gardner \u0026amp; the Bergen Philharmonic, following \"Piano Concerto \u0026amp; Peer Gynt\" (CHSA5190). The \"Britten: Peter Grimes\" (CHSA5250) with Stuart Skelton in the title role won the \"Recording of the Year\" at the Gramophone Awards 2021. Symphonic Dances, Op. 64, is a symphonic work in which four movements come together to form a unified whole. Like Grieg's other works, it draws much of its inspiration from traditional Norwegian folk songs.The \"Funeral March for Ricardo Nordlokk EG107\" at the end of this album was composed by Grieg for his close friend Ricardo Nordlokk, and was originally published as a solo piano work. Johan Halvorsen (1865-1936), who was on his way to Bergen for Grieg's funeral, arranged the work for orchestra.
