This superb recording is reissued by a splendid ensemble of performers, including the famous gamba virtuoso Guido Balestracci and Paolo Pandolfo! All 12 pieces of "Sonata Op.5" including the famous La Folia by Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) are performed in the 18th century arrangement for viola da gamba and basso continuo, reissued from the Glossa Cabinet series! The main gamba is played by the Italian virtuoso Guido Balestracci, and the basso continuo is played by Paolo Pandolfo, Eunice Brandan, and other distinguished musicians. Corelli's Op.5 was originally composed for violin and basso continuo, but various arrangements of the work have been made since its publication, which shows the popularity of the composer and his works. The manuscript score of the viola da gamba version used for this recording, which contains all 12 sonatas, is in the collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris.The arranger is unknown, but it is believed to have been composed in German-speaking countries, based on a copy of the original version for violin published in Rome in 1700.
