The symphonic concerto is anguish itself, and it is almost depressing to listen to. However, this thoroughness has an irresistible charm. The year before this performance, Germany had annexed Austria, and Japan had returned the Tokyo Olympics. At the beginning of the year, the first Konoe cabinet collapsed, which led to the Sino-Japanese War. Furtwängler must have felt this kind of disquiet firsthand. The orchestra and the soloist Fischer give an intense performance in the bitter cold of Berlin, as if they were screaming for salvation. The straight sound image here is also a delight, as the previously released recording had too much echo. The Second Symphony was once dismissed as a bad work, but audiences have grown up, and now it seems to have been reinstated as a symphonist of the 20th century who deserves attention. This is the youngest of Furtwängler's several recordings. It would be welcome to have it in one piece.
