The London Symphony Orchestra and its principal guest conductor since the 2016\/17 season, Gianandrea Noseda, have continuously featured Shostakovich's symphonies. Of these, recordings of No. 5 in September 2016, No. 8 in April 2018, No. 4 in November 2018, and up to No. 1 in March 2019 have been released on the LSO Live label. This fourth release includes No. 9 from June 2018 and No. 9 recorded in January and February 2020 before the current lockdown. Noseda was Principal Guest Conductor under Valery Gergiev at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg for 10 years beginning in 1997, during which time he spent three months each year in the city where Shostakovich was born and raised. It was during this experience that Noseda developed a strong attachment to Russian music, especially Shostakovich. Symphony No. 9, written to celebrate the victory of World War II, was begun at the end of 1944, the year before the war ended, and premiered on November 3, 1945, by the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Mravinsky. The government had expected a large-scale festive work modeled after Beethoven's \"Ninth,\" but Shostakovich was strongly criticized for completing a different work that was light-hearted and mocking. Perhaps because of this, Mravinsky, who premiered the work, never performed it again, and no recordings of it remain. Noseda's recording gives us a crisp and clear presentation of Shostakovich's refracted thoughts. The Tenth Symphony was written in 1953, the year of Stalin's death, and is said to symbolize the \"thawing of the Stalinist regime. Noseda conducts convincingly, peering into the harsh and profound world of Shostakovich.
