He was the best known pianist in Europe in the early 19th century and had only one rival, Hummel. He composed numerous piano pieces, of course, and his \"Techniques of Piano Technique,\" published in 1831, is known to have influenced many aspiring pianists. Chopin, too, was at one time eager to become Kalkbrenner's pupil, but he was too arrogant, believing himself to be the \"only classical composer\" to succeed Mozart, Beethoven, and Haydn, and in the end Chopin never became his pupil. Kalkbrenner wrote piano music to show people his talent, but as a result, he was unable to escape the influence of his predecessors, and his existence was almost forgotten.The three sonatas recorded here are also in the Beethovenian and Mozartian styles, but there are also two movements of exceptional beauty and some parts that remind one of the young Chopin, making this a fine piece with much to hear.
