This is a version of Brahms' String Sextet arranged for piano trio. The arrangement was done by Kirchner, who was a close friend of Brahms, and Brahms himself was pleased with this version, saying, "It gives me a lot of pleasure. The performance by the Italian Ceccanti brothers and Matteo Fossi is sharp, clear, and powerful, and the passion of the 27-year-old Brahms is directly conveyed in the second movement andante of No. 1, which is famous for its lamentations. [About the work] Theodor Kirchner [1823-1903] was a close friend of the Schumann family, and even cited Kirchner when Schumann wrote the influential article that essentially launched Brahms' career in 1853. Kirchner was 10 years older than Brahms, a pianist, organist, and composer admired by Mendelssohn and Wagner, who met Brahms in the spa town of Baden-Baden in 1865, beginning a lifelong exchange.Kirchner, whose main activity was as a performer, focused on making arrangements of large instrumental works in a style that was easy to play, so that many listeners would have a chance to experience the works. Brahms highly valued Kirchner's arrangements, and they were a good source of income for Kirchner as well, as they sold well in sheet music. He made arrangements for solo piano and duet, but his arrangement for string sextet, which was a triplet, required a great deal of effort. (1/2)
