Giuseppe Chiaramonte, who performs, made his debut with Brilliant Classics in 2020 with his recording of Johann Caspar Merz's Fantasy (item no. 95722). The warmth of his tone and his adventurous spirit in reviving the music of the composer once called "the guitarist," has earned him acclaim from many guitar journals. This time we focus on Luis Millán, a composer who seems to be the 16th century equivalent of Merz: "El Maestro," published in 1536, is a collection of music for vihuela, the oldest Spanish collection of instrumental and accompaniment pieces, and the first printed guitar tablature in Spain. The fantasias in the collection are said to have been improvised on the instrument and then written down on paper, music that developed from the very nature of the instrument on which it was composed. The six pavanes are similar to the dances of the same name from northern Europe, but are characterized by a more melancholy tone. Narvaez's work, on the other hand, features more complex polyphony, but is perceived as more restrained than Milan's. Thanks to these two composers, the vihuela became popular in Spain in the 16th century, leading to the development of the guitar.
