String Quartet No. 2, written around 1869, is a large piece with a playing time of over 50 minutes. It is an ambitious work, with a lot of chromatic harmony and modulations, by a young composer who was fascinated by Wagner's music at the time. Dvořák later destroyed the score, but a copy of the parts was found in the 20th century, and the work was premiered in 1932 and finally published in 1962. The folk song elements are thin, and the overall structure is relatively free. The first piece on the album, \"Bagatelle,\" was written in 1878 and features an unusual arrangement of two violins, cello, and harmonium, making effective use of melodies from old Bohemian folk songs in this charming collection. Ryoko Morooka, who plays the harmonium, is an organist based in Germany, active in performance and teaching. The final piece, \"Rondo,\" was performed during Dvořák's farewell tour for his departure to New York. The familiar melody and the cello's virtuosity stand out.
