The program also includes five motets for unaccompanied chorus and two equales for three trombones. Bruckner's Mass No. 2 was commissioned for the dedication of the new cathedral in Linz and completed in 1866, but due to delays in the construction of the cathedral, the first performance under Bruckner's direction also took place in September 1869. The work was written for eight-part mixed chorus and wind ensemble, and because the chorus was too large to perform in the new chapel, it was performed outdoors to great acclaim.Bruckner later revised the piece in 1882 and premiered it on October 4, 1885 at the Old Cathedral in Linz, where it was also a remarkable success.
