Kubelik's Bull 8 stereo live recording of his return to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra is now available on UHQCD! Kubelík became Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1950. Although he left behind many great recordings, he left the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1953 (his last season) with a broken heart. This is a live performance of his first appearance at the podium of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 13 years. He had already established his reputation as the principal conductor of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. Kubelik stayed in Chicago for three weeks and conducted three programs. The final performances were Bruckner's Eighth Symphony and Wagner's "Prelude and Love Death" from "Tristan und Isolde". The concert was hailed as a "triumphant return" and Kubelík was invited back to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for the rest of his life. Bruckner's performance was full of power, and the large pause in the fourth movement was a surprise. The virtuosity of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra also pervades every corner.
