The First Years, a collection of live footage from the spectacular start of both Riccardo Chailly & the Lucerne Festival Orchestra Riccardo Chailly has been Music Director of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra since 2016. This DVD box contains live footage from his inaugural concert as Music Director, as well as live footage from the Lucerne Festival between 2016 and 2019, the first period of the two orchestras' activities. The Lucerne Festival Orchestra was founded by the late Claudio Abbado and Lucerne Festival Artistic Director Michael Heflinger in 2003 as the resident orchestra of the Lucerne Festival, after the Swiss Festival Orchestra was founded in 1938 by a group of renowned musicians under the direction of the great conductor Toscanini. In October 2017, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra made its first tour of Japan in 11 years, and its first since Schee's appointment, with great success. The concert was a great success. Mahler Symphony No. 8 was performed at the inaugural concert.This was the only piece in the Mahler cycle that Abbado had been working on that could not be performed. With this inaugural concert by Chailly, the cycle was completed; in 2018, an all-Ravel program, featuring works based on dramatic literature such as Mendelssohn's "A Summer Night's Dream" and Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony, was performed in the concert immediately preceding the 2017 concert in Japan, and 2019, an all-Rachmaninoff program with Denis Matsuev as soloist, and live footage of the spectacular start of both. King International
