While Schoenberg, Stravinsky, and Bartók were searching for new directions in the 20th century, when the environment surrounding Western music underwent dramatic changes, the three cellists here have in common that they have created highly individualistic works while staying within the realm of tonal music. Martineau's First Cello Concerto, which also features jazz-like syncopation, is one of the four cello concertos by Martineau, the first and second drafts of which were dedicated to the virtuoso composer Fournier in 1930 and 1939, respectively, and were modified three times before the final draft was completed in 1955.Throughout his career, Martineau experimented with many different techniques, from neo-baroque styles to jazz, and the fact that both are heard in this delightful concerto is a direct reflection of the composer himself. Hindemith's third and final cello concerto, in addition to being written in intricate counterpoint, is also a delightful revival of the concept of the soloist in the concerto as a hero who is able to compete with the orchestra, in keeping with the temperament of the instrument. In contrast, Honegger's single-movement cello concerto is accessible, poetic, and sophisticated, with a distinctly French jazz influence, influenced by Ravel and Gershwin. Moser, born in 1979, is of a young generation and impresses with his skillful and objective approach to the work. The orchestra led by Poppen also provides strong backup with colorful tones and succeeds in perfectly capturing the essence of the highly ordered score.
