Haydn's "The Last Seven Words of Christ on the Cross" in Quartet and String Quartet Edition Haydn's "The Last Seven Words of Christ on the Cross" was first composed in 1786 in an orchestral version, and the following year was arranged for string quartet and solo piano at the request of the publisher. In 1796, the lyrics were added in German and the work became an oratorio. The string quartet version is an important part of the repertoire, but it is undeniable that the role of the wind instruments has been omitted. This time, La Chapelle Renane and eight members of the 1781 Quartet have attempted a new version for quartet and string quartet. Because of the problems with the original wind parts and the absence of the chorus, the eight musicians pay great attention to detail, and their enthusiasm for bringing out the transparency while retaining the tragic message is very moving.
