This 18-CD box set features the Kontarski brothers—elder brother Alfons and younger brother Alois—who performed as one of the world’s leading piano duos for nearly 30 years. They served as a model for all subsequent brother piano duos, and to this day, the two remain unparalleled in their musical and analytical acuity and intellectual insight. Their performances, particularly captivating for their clear and crystalline tone, were described as “genius” by their legendary teacher, Eduard Erdmann, and by American critics as “a single pianist with two bodies.” While inspiring many contemporary composers to create new, highly sophisticated works, they also performed the Classical and Romantic repertoire with clear, consistent interpretations that avoided excessive emotional expression.\n\nThe set includes works by Bartók, Bizet, Brahms, Debussy, Dvořák, Fauré, Milhaud, Ravel, and Schubert, as well as works by contemporary composers who wrote for the Kontarski brothers, such as Boulez, Kagel, Kéremény, Ligeti, Poussel, and Zimmermann. The collection includes many recordings released on CD for the first time (Schubert’s “Hungarian Divertimento,” “Grand Duet,” and “Fantasy in F minor”; numerous pieces from the French four-hand piano repertoire; Schrammel’s “Vienna Is Always Vienna”; and Mozart’s Piano Sonata No. 16, among others). Messiaen’s “Quartet for the End of Time” and the collection of works for violin and piano by Vouhant are important albums by Alfons Kontarski released on the Koch-Schwan label. Saint-Saëns’s “The Carnival of the Animals” is included in three versions: music only, with English narration, and with German narration. The booklet, featuring a cover illustration by Christoph Kontarsky (son of Alois Kontarsky), includes liner notes by Peter Jüring and Markus Kettner, as well as numerous rare and previously unpublished photographs.
