He changed the Halle's fortunes and was associated with the orchestra for 27 years. Barbirolli began his career as a cellist and established himself as a conductor in England in his 20s. He made his first contract with the New York Philharmonic in 1927, succeeding Toscanini, with whom he performed for seven seasons (1936-1943).
