Description:

The first release on the "Verbier Festival Gold" label, a 5-CD set of symphonies "born from the spirit of the string quartet" from the violinist-turned-conductor, and the first release on the new "Verbier Festival Gold" label, a partnership between the Verbier Festival held each summer in Verbier, Switzerland, and Deutsche Grammophon. This is the first release on the new "Verbier Festival Gold" label. This 5-CD set features the complete Beethoven symphonies performed by Hungarian-born Gábor Takács-Názi with the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, for which he serves as music director. The result is this complete recording of Beethoven's nine symphonies. The resulting cycle captures the free and innovative performance of these masterpieces, each tackled with spontaneity, insight, and joy. As the famous Beethoven biographer Jan Swafford said, "What we hear is sincerity. It is not romantic comfort or self-esteem, but rather the sense that each piece speaks its own truth in its own terms. There is a sense of intimate communication between orchestra and conductor, where the vision of the work individually and as a whole is presented. This album is "a symphony born of the spirit of the string quartet. Gabor Takács-Nagy, founder and namesake of the legendary Takács String Quartet, takes a chamber music approach: after 17 years of performing Beethoven's complete string quartets on the world stage as a first violinist, he has now returned to the orchestra as a conductor with the essence of Beethoven in his body. The 44-page booklet contains a fascinating introduction to each symphony by Jan Swafford. Swafford also talks with Gabor Takács-Nagy.The conversation between these two forensic minds is witty and stimulating, and their conversation reveals how this conductor values curiosity and is a great philanthropist, full of childlike wonder and keen insight.
