Her latest album features two Mozart piano concertos performed with the Lyceum Orchestra of Havana. This is the first classical music collaboration between American and Cuban musicians since the dissolution of political relations between the United States and Cuba. Based in Havana, the young members of this Havana-based Lyceum Orchestra are faced daily with the difficulty of having proper instruments, and are forced to lower their tuning to A=336 in order to keep the strings from breaking. For this recording, the usual A=440 was used. Simone Dinnerstein's direct connection to Cuba was when her teacher, Havana-born pianist Solomon Mikowski, inaugurated a 2014 music festival in Havana and invited her to perform.Two years later, she returned to the Festival, this time to perform the Mozart Concerto with the Havana Lyceum Orchestra. Despite the problems she had with the instruments used by the orchestra, she found the thoughtful sensitivity and sensual beauty of the music and decided to record it. Dinnerstein and the orchestra are one and the same in this wonderfully natural Mozart performance.
