Bizet: Excerpts from the opera "Carmen" (performed in German) [approx. 53 min. Performers Karl Böhm conductor Staatskapelle Dresden Carmen: Elisabet Hengen (mezzo-soprano), Don Jose: Torsten Ralph (tenor), Escamillo: Josef Hermann (baritone), Michaela: Elfriede Weidrich (soprano), etc, Dresden State Opera Chorus]. Recordings: June-July 1939 1., June 1937 2. / Semperoper Dresden, June 1942 4./Health Museum Dresden,December 4, 1942 5./Dresden Staatsoper (2CD) 70'34" 79'26" The 49th installment of the profil label's popular "Edition Staatskapelle Dresden" series is Karl Böhm in his mature years. The world premiere recordings of Reger's "Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Mozart" from 1937 and Brahms' "Symphony No. 4" from 1939 are reproduced from the Electrola shellac disc. At that time, one had to stop and record about four minutes on each side of the SP disc, but Reger's recording was brilliant, both acoustically and musically flowing. No wonder it was highly praised in magazines at the time. In 1941, magnetic tape was developed and the stage of the Dresden Sanitary Museum was turned into a broadcast studio to begin a new page, the memorable first of which was Schubert's Symphony No. 5, conducted by Böhm. Also included is a bonus excerpt from "Carmen" from Böhm's farewell performance in 1942. Both are reproduced from tapes owned by the Staatskapelle Dresden. You can enjoy the brilliant prewar performances of the Staatskapelle Dresden. (King International)
